Earlier we talked about J’s Steak Frites, a Toronto steakhouse that serves you unlimited fries with your steak. Sounds like every steak frites lover’s dream right? For $56 per person, it was a pretty good deal so my boyfriend and I made a reservation to go on his birthday.
J’s Steak Frites is a popular restaurant with reservations made up to 2 weeks in advance. If you want to go on a Friday or weekend night, I suggest booking your reservation as soon as the slot opens up since reservations fill up quickly and you can wait for a while for a walk-in spot.
We both have never been but one of my boyfriend’s favourite meal is steak frites so why not treat him right? We were sat at our table and immediately were greeted with water and was explained how the prix fixe menu worked.
To start we were served baked in-house bread and butter then the next course of salad with house dressing. The salad dressing was some sort of vinaigrette which I enjoyed with the mixed greens but the only downside to the salad was the candied walnuts which I’m not the biggest fan of. At this point, the waitress also asked us how we liked our 10-ounce New York strip steak cooked and then wrote our preferences on the table so they would know who ordered which.
Once we finished the salad our steaks came out on a tray with a warmer underneath to keep the steak warm. The steak also comes with a special butter sauce for you to dip it in.
Our steaks were both cooked perfectly and seasoned with flakey salt. The waiter told us just to try the steak plain with no sauce first so we did and we were both blown away by how good it was. We then tried a piece dipped in the butter sauce and in my opinion, the sauce tasted better with the fries so I didn’t put any more sauce on my steak.
The fries are always cooked to order so you’re going to constantly get new fries a few minutes after you’ve asked for a new plate. The fries were shoestring and were crispy, reminded me of McDonald’s fries, which is not a bad thing because they’re my favourite fries of all time.
We tried to get our money’s worth but also had a bet to see how many plates of fries we could both consume. Ultimately in the end collectively we had 6 plates of fries which I think is pretty decent.
We went in thinking we were going to get one of their daily desserts, which they had red velvet cake that night and it’s my favourite dessert, but were too stuffed with all the steak and fries to eat anything else.
In conclusion, if we were to rate our experience we would give it 4 out of 5 stars. The food was delicious and the service was amazing. The price was also pretty reasonable since a New York strip at The Keg is $46 and that doesn’t come with a salad or unlimited fries either.
Would you try this steakhouse that is serving up all-you-can-eat fries? Let us know if you think the price is worth it.
